!! Old sailing ships had a great number of ropes to control their sails. A crewman had to learn which rope did what in order to handle a ship's ropes.(舊帆船有大量繩索來控制風帆,船員必須了解每根繩索的作用,才能控制得宜。)

!! The term was transferred to non-nautical matt-ers by the late 19th centu-ry. It's use was commonin horse-racing circles, and might also have a circus slang in origin.(到了十九世紀後期,該術語被轉移到非航海事務。它的使用在賽馬圈中十分常見,並且可能起源於馬戲團的俚語。)
