!! In the 12th century, English first went intoIrelandand established authorities in the region around Dublin, which was known as the “pale.” The remainder ofIrelandwas governed by local kings and leaders of clans, regarded as very uncouth. So “beyond the pale” was outside of the “civilized” zone, and deemed vastly inferior.
